The Simons Foundation invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships to encourage research on basic issues in marine microbial ecology. The foundation is especially interested in applicants who have training in various areas who wish to apply their expertise to understanding the use of microorganisms in shaping ocean procedures, and vice versa, in addition to applicants with expertise in modeling or concept development. Though these cross-disciplinary applicants will receive special attention, applicants involved in ocean research are encouraged to apply. The base anticipates awarding five fellowships in 2018.
Qualification:
Applicants must have obtained their Ph.D. or equivalent degree in just three years of their fellowship’s start date. Preference will be for applicants without a longer than 1 year of postdoctoral experience. Applicants may be citizens of any nation.Awards can only be issued to nonprofit research universities or research institutions at the U.S.
Award:
The
award is for three years, contingent upon satisfactory yearly progress reports, and will comprise an yearly stipend of $62,000 and an yearly allowance of up to $25,000. The allowance could be spent on health insurance to the fellow and family, additional advantages as required by the establishment, study supplies, small equipment (such as computers), attendance at scientific meetings, and other research-related traveling. Up to $2,000 of this allowance could be used for movement of their fellow and family to the host establishment. Relocation costs must be in accordance with the policies of their host establishment. - Short overview of previous research experience along with a personal autobiographical statement (2 pages)
- Short research proposal with title (two to three pages, plus references and page for characters )
- Biosketches of the applicant and host, such as publications
- Technical abstract
- Letters of recommendation from applicant’s thesis adviser and two additional study scientists, and letter of support in the postdoctoral research host, who must acknowledge approval of the candidate for their lab.
