GE Healthcare Introduces New MAb Purification Resin

GE healthcare has now announced the launch of a new Protein A chromatography resin, MabSelect PrismA, for improving monoclonal antibody (mAb) purification capacity by up to 40%.

GE said the resin is more alkaline-stable, and as a result, MabSelect PrismA can be cleaned with a higher concentration of sodium hydroxide to better control cross-contamination and bioburden risks.

Protein purification is an obligatory step in biomanufacturing, with the target protein used to make the final biopharmaceutical product extracted from cell culture. Nearly all mAbs on the market use Protein A resin as the first purification step. Protein A resin offers an efficient, common platform for different mAbs, according to the company.

With the increased efficiency of mAb production over the years, purification processing times have increased, which increasingly consumes chromatography resins. This puts pressure on purification technologies.

GE says it will manufacture its new protein A resin, MabSelect PrismA, in-house at its production facility in Uppsala, Sweden. GE boasts that its new resin can increase mAb purification capacity by 40% compared to current media, which would increase production efficiency. According to GE, purification is a necessary first step in biomanufacturing proteins. MabSelect PrismA will

be fully available to GE customers in 1H18.

Biopharma companies are constantly looking for more ways to increase their output, and protein A has a critical role to support these efforts. The thorough research and development work that we have carried out to create MabSelect PrismA sets a new standard for monoclonal antibody purification,” said Jan Makela, General Manager, BioProcess, GE Healthcare Life Sciences.

With this chromatography resin our customers will be able to produce more biopharmaceuticals out of their existing manufacturing equipment. Protein purification is no longer a bottleneck, but driving higher productivity and shorter manufacturing lead times for our customers,” Makela said.
