Amrita Hospital at Kochi becomes Asia’s first to embed neuro-stimulator using Robotic technology which holds promising cure for brain disorders.
In the year 1987, for the first time in USA, Deep Brain Stimulation was endeavoured. The process involved embedding a neuro-stimulator that directs electrical impulses to specific zones in the brain.
Now a medical robot named ROSA, performed the minimally invasive surgery of embedding the Deep Brain Stimulator accurately into the central nervous system, which would otherwise been impossible by human hands.
Dr Ashok Pillai, Clinical Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, performed this surgery, free of cost at Amrita Hospital and most of the patient’s symptoms were reported to have disappeared.
DBS provides therapeutic aid for treatment-resistant disorders like Parkinson’s, Epilepsy, motor disorders, chronic pain, depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders.
Functional neurosurgery is an important division of neurosurgery that helps correct treatment-resistant neurological disorders. The ROSA robotic technology is often called the GPS system of the brain, guarantees great precision during the implantation of the neuro-stimulator.
