The PhD programme at IISER Pune is a blend of class room curriculum and mentoring under-graduate students along with a major research component. IISER Pune admits students to doctoral programme in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Climate Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Humanities & Social Sciences and inter-disciplinary areas of research.
Students with a Master’s degree in Science / Mathematics or a four-year Bacherlor degree with at least 60% marks (aggregate) are encouraged to apply to our PhD programme. In addition to the qualifying degree, we expect the students to have qualified a national examination such as CSIR-UGC NET/GATE/JEST/NBHM/JGEEBILS, etc. depending on their area of research interest. Students will be selected to the PhD programme based on performance in the interviews.
Please note that the precise eligibility criterion for each year may vary from department to department and will be announced at the time of intake.
PhD program in Biology – August 2018
Eligibility Criteria
Online applications are invited for the PhD program in Biology at IISER Pune for the August 2018 session. The eligibility criteria and a link to list of candidates who qualify to apply are given below.
IISER Pune hosts a diverse group of researchers working in various areas. Given the broad scope of the research done at IISER Pune, we are also open to applicants who have specialized in areas other than Biology. Candidates who have not appeared for or did not qualify the JGEEBILS entrance exam, a pre-requisite to apply to the PhD program in Biology, may choose to apply to the Ecology and Evolution stream or the Quantitative Biology stream provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria for the respective stream (see below). Candidates applying through these streams will only be eligible to work with faculty specializing in Ecology and Evolution or Quantitative Biology.
Candidates in the final year of their qualifying degree, who have appeared or are about to appear for their final exam, can also apply for the PhD program. If selected, admission to the program will be provisional, subject to completing the qualifying degree before August 1, 2018, as per the criteria specified below
Please note: Applying does not automatically guarantee that a candidate will be shortlisted for the interview. The department may use additional criteria in order to shortlist candidates for interviews depending on the number of applications received.
Eligibility Criteria for Biology
2. Minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or CGPA 6 out of 10 point scale (55% or equivalent CGPA in aggregate for SC/ST and PD candidates) in Masters’ Degree in any branch of Science: Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Biological Sciences / Ecology & Environmental Sciences / Biodiversity / Psychology or equivalent. BE / B.Tech / M.Tech or MBBS degree holders may also apply.
3. In addition to the above criteria, the candidate MUST have qualified any ONE of the following exams:

Eligibility Criteria for Ecology and Evolution
Eligibility Criteria:
Only those candidates who meet both the criteria below may apply online for the PhD program in Biology (Ecology and Evolution).
1. Qualified GATE(Ecology) with a score that is valid on 01-Aug-2018. Please note that any other GATE (e.g. Life Sciences etc.) will NOT be considered for this purpose.
2. Minimum 60% marks in aggregate (not only in majoring subject) or CGPA 6 out of 10 point scale (55% or equivalent CGPA in aggregate for SC/ST) in Master’s Degree in any branch of Science: Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Biological Sciences / Ecology & Environmental Sciences / Biodiversity / Psychology or equivalent. BE / B.Tech / M.Tech or MBBS degree holders may also apply.

Eligibility Criteria for Quantitative Biology
Eligibility Criteria:
1. Minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or CGPA 6 out of 10 point scale (55% or equivalent CGPA in aggregate for SC/ST and PD candidates) in Masters’ Degree in any branch of Science: Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Biological Sciences / Ecology & Environmental Sciences / Biodiversity / Psychology or equivalent. BE / B.Tech / M.Tech or MBBS degree holders may also apply.
2. In addition to the above criteria, the candidate MUST have qualified any ONE of the following exams:
(a) National Eligibility Test (NET) with VALID* CSIR-JRF / UGC-JRF
(b) DBT-JRF-A / ICMR-JRF / DBT-BINC
(c) CSIR/UGC NET-LS# or DAE-JEST$ or GATE or GPATb or NBHM in last two years (2016-2018).
(d) INSPIRE-Ph.D. fellowship (Should be in possession of Provisional Selection Letter at the time of Interview)
(e) IISER BS-MS (All IISERs) Dual degree students (CGPA >= 7.0)
* The scores/ranks MUST be valid at least until August 01, 2018.
#CSIR-LS rank-holders up to rank 200 are eligible.

Admissions to the PhD Programme starting August 2018
Application Procedure:
- Only online applications will be accepted.
- The candidates must carefully fill and submit the online application form on or before the specified date.
- After the last date, all applications will be screened and candidates selected for interviews will be intimated by email.

- Candidates who are appearing or are about to appear for final examinations of the qualifying degree program are eligible to apply for PhD program. - Selection will be based on interviews of the short-listed candidates.
- Relaxation of eligibility criteria for SC/ST and PD applicants will be as per Government of India norms. Candidates belonging to reserved category will have to submit relevant certificates, if selected.
