What is the first step I should take?
First, verify that you fulfill all the eligibility criteria (see section above). In particular, the Academic and International criteria. Namely, you have to have completed a Master’s degree or an equivalent diploma on, or after, the 2nd of September 2013, and by the 31st  of August 2017; you must not already be, nor ever have been, enrolled in a PhD programme, and nor must you already be in possession of a PhD. You must not have had your main residence, or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.), in France for more than 12 months during the three years immediately prior to the deadline for the call (9 January 2017); short stays such as holidays in France, are not taken into account.

What is the second step I should take?
Second, find a research group who will support your candidature. When you contact them, send them your CV and a motivation letter explaining why their research interests you. The motivation letter may be brief to begin with, but explain how your academic background and/or research experience matches the research focus of the group. Their research group should be affiliated with USPC.

How do I find a research group?
You may find a research group from a list of groups classified according to their research interests at the INSPIRE website within the Social Sciences and Humanities, within Physical Sciences and Engineering, or within Life Sciences at the INSPIRE website (www.uspc.fr/inspire). Note that these are only a subset of the actual research groups affiliated with USPC and a more complete listing is available via the websites of the Doctoral Schools. If you find a group via the website of one of the 32 Doctoral Schools affiliated with USPC please verify with the person responsible for the group that their group is affiliated with the USPC.

What does “support my candidature” with respect to the research group mean?
If the research group is interested in your profile, i.e., your academic credentials and your potential to carry out research in their group, they will continue the discussion with you and confirm whether you may apply for an INSPIRE fellowship to carry out research in their group.

What does “affiliated with the USPC” mean?
The USPC is a COMUE (Community of Educational Institutions) consisting of nine members of which the eight higher-education institutions are Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3, Université Paris Descartes, Université Paris Diderot, Université Paris 13, EHESP, INALCO, IPGP, and Sciences Po; the ninth being Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme. The supervisor of the thesis (“directeur/directrice de thèse”) should belong to a research group affiliated with one of the eight higher-education institutions. The PhD fellow would likewise adopt the same affiliation. As a PhD candidate you will also be affiliated with a Doctoral School, the USPC has 32 in total that are affiliated with one of its eight higher-education institutions. However, please note, these Doctoral Schools may also be affiliated with other higher-education institutions and it is therefore important to verify that the group you identify is clearly affiliated (“rattacher”) to the USPC.

What happens after I submit my application?
There is a three-step selection process as detailed under the section “Selection Process and Calendar”. After you submit your application online, all the information and documents in the application package will be sent to the relevant Doctoral School. The Doctoral School will then make their selection based on their selection criteria, which will include foremost an evaluation of the academic strength and research experience of the candidate, and the quality of the research project that has been submitted together with the research group affiliated with the USPC.

Please note that the deadline for submitting your project via the online portal is 12H CET (Paris time) on the 9th of January 2017.

What are some of the practical details of the benefits of an INSPIRE fellowship (salary, insurance, housing, etc.)?
INSPIRE is funded by the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND action within the H2020 Research and Innovation programme of the European Union. Within this programme funded by the EU and the USPC, the PhD fellows will sign a three-year work contract with one of the eight higher-education institutions of the USPC.
These PhD fellowships are remunerated above that of a standard French PhD contract with a gross monthly salary, including employer costs, of ~2600 €. This salary includes unemployment insurance, work-site insurance, and health insurance as well as a pension plan. After standard deductions, this will amount to a net salary of ~ 1500 € (a typical gross salary after deduction of employer costs is around 1900 €).
