NCESS Internship 2026
The National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) offers Internship, Summer Training and Dissertation opportunities, including the NCESS Internship 2026, to students pursuing university-level education. The programmes provide students with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with and pursue research in different branches of Earth Sciences. Applications for the Internship/Training/Dissertation Programme at ESSO-NCESS are accepted during February and September every year. About NCESS Student Opportunities
The National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) provides opportunities for school and college students to familiarise themselves with different branches of Earth Sciences and pursue research. The institute conducts an Open Day for school students during April every year, coinciding with Earth Day celebrations. During the Open Day, NCESS laboratories are opened for students to visit and interact with scientists.
NCESS also offers Internship, Summer Training and Dissertation programmes to selected candidates as part of their university curriculum. The Centre is a recognised R&D institution of various universities for doctoral programmes. Research scholars can register for PhD programmes in science, environmental and interdisciplinary topics, subject to announcements made by the respective universities.

NCESS Internship/Training/Dissertation – September 2026
Applications for the Internship/Training/Dissertation programme at ESSO-NCESS can be submitted during February and September every year. For the September 2026 cycle, applications are accepted from: 1 September to 30 September 2026
Selected candidates are required to bring a printout of the application form duly signed by the Head of the Department (HOD) with the official seal at the time of arrival for training at ESSO-NCESS.
Eligibility Criteria
Applications from the following categories of students will be considered for scrutiny and final acceptance:

Application Process
Eligible students can submit applications for the NCESS Internship 2026 through the online application form during the prescribed application period.
The online application form will be active only during the following periods every year:
- 1 February to 28 February
- 1 September to 30 September
Late applications will not be entertained.
Selection Process
No personal email communication will be sent to shortlisted candidates.
For NCESS Internship 2026 applications submitted during September, the shortlisted candidates approved by the Director, NCESS will be announced on the website during the first week of December.
The shortlisted candidates list will also mention:
- Name of the allocated supervisor/group at NCESS
- Title of the Internship/Training/Dissertation
The supervisor will be allotted based on the application and the applicant’s research interests by the Visiting Students Committee.
Students and supervisors are not permitted to select a student or supervisor of their choice.
Important Guidelines
Selected visiting students must accept the Internship/Training/Dissertation offer within 7-10 working days. If no response is received within the specified period, the offer may be transferred to other applicants based on the waiting list.
Candidates who were selected for training earlier but did not join do not need to apply again.
Students are required to undergo a minimum of 8 weeks of continuous training at NCESS. Candidates who do not complete the required continuous training period will not be considered.
Field Trips
During the Internship/Training/Dissertation period, only day field trips without stay are permitted for visiting students.
Any such fieldwork requires prior approval from:
- Visiting Students Committee
- Director, NCESS
Campus Access
- Visiting students are permitted on the NCESS campus only on working days.
- In exceptional circumstances, students may be allowed on weekends or holidays, provided prior approval is obtained from the Supervisor and Group Head.
Presentation and Certificate
After completing the Internship/Training/Dissertation, students are required to inform the Visiting Student Committee.
The committee will arrange a presentation in online/offline mode.
Every trainee and dissertation student must deliver a 15-minute presentation, consisting of:
- 10-minute presentation
- 5-minute discussion
After the presentation, students can get their report/dissertation signed by the supervisor and submit it to the Visiting Students Committee for issuance of the certificate.
The submitted report/dissertation must also be submitted to the NCESS library for future reference.
Fee, Accommodation and Transport
There is no fee for carrying out project work at NCESS.
However:
- No accommodation will be provided to project students.
- No transport will be provided to project students.
Publication Guidelines
Any publication or communication to a journal resulting from the work carried out at NCESS must have the consent of the Guide and NCESS.
