Scientists Create First AI-Designed Synthetic Virus
Have we ever imagined that someday we could create a synthetic virus in a lab, that too using a computer? That day is not near but already here. Yes, scientists in the United States have used artificial intelligence to create new viruses that do not exist in nature. The research is an important step in synthetic biology and could eventually help scientists develop new ways to fight dangerous bacterial infections and AI-Designed Synthetic Virus antibiotic resistance. At the same time, it has raised concerns about biological safety and the possible misuse of the technology.
What did they Actually Do?
Researchers at Stanford University developed a generative AI system called Evo 2, and the findings were published in the journal Science on August 6, 2026. The system can create new genomes, which are the complete sets of DNA instructions that tell living organisms how to function.
Using Evo 2, the researchers designed and produced 16 AI-Designed Synthetic Virus versions known as phages. Out of 300 AI-designed genomes, only 16 of them produced viable synthetic viruses. Bacteriophages are tiny viruses that infect bacteria. They can sometimes be used as an alternative to antibiotics to destroy bacteria that cause infections (in case of antibiotic-resistant bacteria).

The scientists tested the newly created phages in a secure laboratory against E. coli, a common type of bacteria. They found that the new phages were better at killing E. coli than a natural phage called ΦX174, which had been used as a starting template for the AI system. Though a known virus template was used, the AI analysed the DNA pattern and came up with different, unknown patterns that don’t exist in nature.
Stanford researcher Brian Hie, who led the project, said the study shows for the first time that generative technology can design complete genomes that actually work. The researchers chose phages because these viruses are small, have been studied extensively and already have several uses in biology and medicine.
Hie said the same approach could eventually be used with bacteria and, later, more complicated forms of life.
Genomics expert Adrian Woolfson, chief executive of DNA synthesis company Genyro, described the research as a major turning point for biology. It could allow scientists to move beyond simply studying organisms produced by natural evolution and begin exploring entirely new biological designs.
Could This AI-Designed Synthetic Virus Favour Phage Therapy?
One important possible use is phage therapy. This treatment has been used for decades in Eastern Europe. Doctors select phages that can attack the particular bacterial strain infecting a patient. The phages can then be applied to the infection, injected or given orally.
Phage therapy is not widely used in Western countries because the process can be complicated and bacteria can develop resistance. But Stanford researcher Samuel King said growing antibiotic resistance means new treatments are increasingly important. AI-designed synthetic viruses (phages) could therefore help renew interest in this approach.
The Biosecurity Issue
Safety remains a major concern. The Stanford experiments used a harmless strain of E. coli, and Evo 2 was not trained on viruses that infect the more complex cells found in animals and plants. However, similar technology could eventually design a much wider variety of viruses or even completely new organisms without starting with an existing natural genome.
Evo 2 is open source and can be downloaded for free. Hie said the team currently has no plans to commercialise the research and believes its possible benefits to health and humanity outweigh the risks.
However, Johns Hopkins University experts Thomas Inglesby and Moritz Hanke warned that current safety and governance systems may not be strong enough to manage generative genomics. They said society now needs effective oversight so the technology can deliver medical benefits without being used to cause serious harm.
What is the Takeaway?
With the advancement of technology, biology is taking different shapes. The scientists used a genome language model to design this AI-Designed Synthetic Virus. Though only a few turned out to be effective, this gives a broad spectrum for further research. Now, AI is not just designing the genome, but when synthesised, it can produce a functional biological system.
