Great news for GATE aspirants! The official GATE 2027 details have been released by IIT Madras, the Organizing Institute for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. Candidates planning to appear for the examination should carefully check the important dates, eligibility criteria, application fees, required documents, examination-city rules, and major changes introduced this year. One of the biggest updates for GATE 2027 is that DigiLocker-based registration is mandatory for all Indian nationals. In addition, a new test paper, Robotics and Automation (RA), has been introduced, and several GATE syllabi and paper combinations have been revised.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027
- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a prestigious national-level examination.
- The examination assesses candidates’ comprehensive understanding of undergraduate-level subjects in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts and Humanities.
- GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.
- Indian Institute of Technology Madras is the Organizing Institute for GATE 2027.
- GATE 2027 will have 30 test papers.
- A GATE score remains valid for three years from the date of announcement of results.
MAJOR UPDATES IN GATE 2027
- Candidates should take note of the following important changes announced for GATE 2027:
- Registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals.
- Candidates must create or update a verified DigiLocker account before registration.
- A new GATE paper, Robotics and Automation (RA), has been introduced.
- The syllabi for GATE 2027 test papers have been revised.
- Updates have been made to the Biotechnology (BT) syllabus.
- Changes have also been made to permitted Two-Paper Combinations.
- Updates have been announced for the Textile Engineering & Fibre Science (TF) paper.
- Sectional paper codes for XE, XH and XL have been changed.
- GATE 2027 will be conducted only at examination centres within India.
- There will be no international examination centres.

- ADMISSION
- A valid GATE score can be used for seeking admission to:
- Master’s programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science and Humanities.
- Direct Doctoral programs in relevant disciplines.
- Doctoral programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts and Humanities in institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other Government agencies.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
- A qualifying GATE score may also help candidates obtain financial assistance for eligible postgraduate and doctoral programs.
- For eligible M.Tech students, financial assistance is currently stated as:
- ₹12,400 per month, generally paid for 22 months.
- For eligible Direct Ph.D. candidates after B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc. or equivalent with a valid GATE score, the stated financial assistance is:
- ₹37,000 per month for the first two years
- ₹42,000 per month from the third to fifth year
- Candidates should refer to the applicable government scholarship and fellowship guidelines for complete terms and conditions.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Before submitting an application, candidates should ensure that they satisfy the eligibility requirements for GATE 2027.
- Candidates who are: currently studying in the 3rd year or higher of any undergraduate degree program, or have completed any Government-approved degree program in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities are eligible to appear for GATE 2027, subject to the detailed requirements applicable to their qualification.
- Candidates possessing qualifications from recognized professional societies should ensure that the examination is approved by MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch./B.Planning or another eligible qualification.

DIGILOCKER REGISTRATION – MANDATORY FOR INDIAN NATIONALS
- A major change in GATE 2027 is the introduction of mandatory DigiLocker-based registration for Indian nationals.
- All Indian candidates must have a verified DigiLocker account.
- Information required for the GATE application may be fetched from DigiLocker, including: Name, Date of birth, Mobile number, Email ID, Profile picture, Address, Verified ID card number.
- Candidates are therefore advised to create or update their verified DigiLocker account before the registration window opens.
Choice of Examination City
Candidates can select six examination cities.
However:
- All six choices must belong to the same GATE 2027 zone.
- GATE 2027 reserves the right to add or remove examination cities.
- Candidates may be allotted a city that is not among their selected preferences in exceptional circumstances.
NO INTERNATIONAL GATE 2027 EXAMINATION CENTRES
- GATE 2027 will be conducted only in India.
- There will be no examination centres outside India.
- Foreign nationals and Indian citizens residing abroad are still eligible to appear for the examination, but they must:
- select an examination city located in India,
- pay the applicable full application fee of ₹2,000 per test paper during the regular period, and
- make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
GATE 2027 TEST PAPERS
- GATE 2027 will have a total of 30 test papers.
- Candidates may appear for:
- one test paper, or
- up to two test papers, subject to the permitted two-paper combinations.
- Candidates should carefully check the latest GATE 2027 syllabus and permitted paper combinations before submitting their application.
- A major addition this year is the introduction of: Robotics and Automation – RA
- Candidates should also pay special attention to revisions related to:
- Biotechnology – BT
- Textile Engineering & Fibre Science – TF
- Engineering Sciences – XE
- Humanities & Social Sciences – XH

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR GATE BIOTECHNOLOGY ASPIRANTS
- GATE Biotechnology candidates should particularly note that the BT syllabus has been updated for GATE 2027.
- Candidates preparing using older GATE BT syllabi or GATE 2026 preparation material should compare their study plan with the official revised GATE 2027 BT syllabus and make the necessary changes.
- The permitted two-paper combinations involving BT have also been updated, so candidates planning to appear for a second paper should verify the latest combination before applying.
