Job Description:

  1. Western Ghats/Nilgiris Landscape

For this job, WWF-India seeks a Senior Project Officer– Elephant Research Biologist (SPO-ERB) to co-lead elephant and HEC research in the Western Ghats/Nilgiris Landscape. This SPO-ERB will coordinate/co-lead the following efforts:

S/he will likewise support the following efforts, which might be led at the landscape or nationwide level by WWF and/or partners:

  • Extensive estimation of elephant populations at numerous scales utilizing genetic capture-recapture;
  • Collection of HEC information from government offices throughout Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala for the IUCN– WWF-India collaboration with Project Elephant to establish a central database on HEC;
  • Data collection, analysis, and writing to support the selected priority conservation advocacy efforts for elephants in the Western Ghats/Nilgiris Landscape;
  • Data collection and field assistance for adaptive on-demand conservation in support of communities and the Forest Department with respect to reducing human-elephant conflict.

Experience & Desired skills:

  • Direct exposure of collaborating with research and conservation institutions
    Gathering and handling data
  • Writing and publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers
  • Working in teams and managing teams of at the very least 2 other people
  • Working in elephant landscapes
  • Engaging respectfully with communities suffering from human-elephant conflict
  • Proficiency/fluency in Tamil, Malayalam, or Kannada is desired

2. Brahmaputra Landscape

For this job, WWF-India seeks a Senior Project Officer– Elephant Research Biologist (SPO-ERB) to co-lead elephant and HEC research in the Brahmaputra Landscape. This SPO-ERB will coordinate/co-lead the following efforts:

  • Research on elephant habitat top quality and use with behavioural observations of collared elephants;
  • Development of a toolkit for the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change and state Forest Departments to decrease HEC through using community institutions and elephant-safe fencings

S/he will also support the following efforts, which might be led at the landscape or national level by WWF and/or collaborators:

  • Establish and assist implement a standardized system for recording data on human-elephant conflict throughout elephant range states;
  • Development of a plan to reduce elephant-train collisions in partnership with the Railway and Forest Departments in the Brahmaputra Landscape;
  • Data collection, analysis, and writing to support the selected concern conservation advocacy effort for elephants in the Brahmaputra Landscape;
  • Data collection and field help for adaptive on-demand conservation on behalf of communities and the Forest Department with respect to reducing human-elephant conflict, including identifying individual elephants engaged in conflict.

Experience & Desired Skills:

  • Exposure of collaborating with research and conservation institutions
  • Collecting and managing data
  • Writing and publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers
  • Working in groups and taking care of teams of at the very least two other individuals
  • Operating in elephant landscapes
  • Engaging pleasantly with communities suffering from human-elephant problem
  • Proficiency/fluency in Assamese and/or Hindi is desired

Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD in biology, ecology, behavior sciences, botany, wildlife preservation, or various other discipline pertaining to elephant biology and/or human-wildlife problem;
    OR
  • Masters in one of these fields with demonstrable publishable research;
    AND
  • Demonstrated capacities in scientific writing;
  • Competency and demonstrated accomplishment in rigorous research design and statistical evaluation (preferably using the program R);.
