SELECTION OF JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWS
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, is a premier institute dedicated to the intense multi-disciplinary research supporting the ambitious nuclear energy program of India. BARC is enabling young, gifted and motivated students to contribute to path-breaking discoveries in frontier regions of scientific research and cutting-edge technology by providing Junior Research Fellowships in the areas of Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences.
Applications are invited from interested students for the award of Junior Research Fellowships at this Centre.
Each of the selected candidates will register for PhD at Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI a deemed to be University of Department of Atomic Energy).
1. AREAS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS IN SCIENCE DISCIPLINES
|Mutation breeding and plant biotechnology, Cancer Biology: basics and drug|
development, bacterial stress biology and heavy metal bioremediation,
Food Technology (Microbiology, preservation and packaging), Structural Biology of
proteins, Cancer diagnostics and Immunology, TB diagnostics/treatment
The Centre also promotes high-quality interdisciplinary research in areas applicable to the Programs.
2. AGE LIMIT:
The candidate should be an Indian national. The candidate ought to be less than 28 years of age as on the last date for receipt of application. Age relaxation is applicable up to 3 years in the event of Other Backward Class applicants, 5 years in case of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants and 10 years in the event of persons with disabilities applicants.
Note: ONLY SSC/ MATRICULATION CERTIFICATE OR BIRTH CERTIFICATE WILL BE ACCEPTED AS PROOF OF DATE OF BIRTH, NO SUBSEQUENT REQUEST FOR CHANGE SHALL BE ENTERTAINED.
i. Candidates must have a consistently good academic record and should have secured a minimum of 60% aggregate in B.Sc. and 55% aggregate in M.Sc. from a recognized University.
ii. a. Candidates those who’ve finished and awaiting the final results of M.Sc. Degree can also apply. However, such applicants should necessarily attach copies of their mark sheets of B.Sc. Degree and a copy of M.Sc. First-year mark sheet(s) together with the application. Such applicants must have scored marks above 60 percent aggregates until the prior semester/year and minimum aggregate of 60 percent in B.Sc. level. If such candidates eventually join the Fellowship, they have obtained aggregate marks of 55 percent in the qualifying degrees.
b. If appearing candidates are chosen for JRF, then they ought to secure 55% marks in aggregate in the M.Sc. Examination and submit their M.Sc. Degree and mark sheet by October 30, 2019, failing which their candidature may be terminated.
iii. Relevant certificates to this effect ought to be submitted at the time of joining the Centre. Wherever the results have been declared as CGPA/GPA, then it may be converted to percentage and entered. (The formula prescribed by the institute for conversion to be indicated at the time of verification).

4. QUALIFYING EXAMINATION:
Candidates that have appeared and successfully cleared the following qualifying exam will be shortlisted for interview at BARC, Mumbai. Applications will be scrutinized and suitability of applicants will be decided on the basis of their academic performance along with the qualifying exam. The recommendation/decision of the Selection Committee will be final and binding.
i. With valid UGC-CSIR-NET Fellowship (SLET/ Lecturership isn’t eligible)
ii. With valid JEST score of 90 percentile and above
iii. With valid ICMR-JRF Test, ICAR-JRF Test.
iv. With valid DBT-JRB Biotechnology Eligibility Test
At the time of application, applicants must clearly indicate the details of the qualifying examinations listed as above for consideration of the application and submit the proof at the time of interview.
5. SELECTION PROCEDURE
Applications will be scrutinized and applicants will be shortlisted for interview according to their academic performance and score obtained in the qualifying exams.
6. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
i. Prior to applying, the candidate must make sure that he/ she meets all of the eligibility conditions mentioned in the advertisement. Candidates must make sure that they fill in the correct info. Furnishing of incomplete, false or misleading information will render the application liable to be rejected. The candidate could be admitted to various stages of the recruitment process based on the information furnished by the candidate in his or her application. Only summary scrutiny of the application will be made prior to the final stage of the recruitment process and detailed scrutiny of the eligibility of the candidate would be done only at the final stage of the recruitment process. Therefore, the candidature of the candidate will stay provisional till detailed scrutiny is undertaken along with the candidate is found eligible in all respects. BARC would be at liberty to reject any application at any stage of the recruitment process in the event the candidate is found ineligible for the post or if it has to do with notice that the candidate has furnished false information. The decision of BARC will be final in deciding the eligibility of the candidate. The mere fact that a call letter has been issued to the candidate and permitted to appear in the interview won’t imply that his/ her candidature has been finally cleared or entries made by the candidate at his or her application have been accepted as true and correct.
ii. Age, qualification, experience, community status, creamy layer status will be reckoned as on the final date for submission of application online.
iii. Those that are in employment under any Central/ State Govt./Public Sector Undertakings/ Corporations/ Local Govt. Etc. must submit a No Objection Certificate from the employer at the time of interview.
iv. Candidates have to take a printout of this application form generated by the system and submit the same via email: [email protected] along with each of the documents.
v. Candidates will have to bring the printouts of their online applications in the time of interview along with original documents.
vi. SC/ST/OBC (clearly indicating Creamy Layer status) certification should be according to the format prescribed for employment in Government of India.
vii. The original certificates/ documents of these candidates will be verified in the final stage of the recruitment procedure. The shortlisted candidates should bring all original certificates of educational qualifications, experience, date of birth, caste certificate in the prescribed format, disability certificate in regard to PWD candidates, No Objection Certificate if in regular employment under any Central/ State Govt./ Public Sector Undertakings/ Corporations/ Local Govt. etc..
viii. The list of applicants chosen for the award of Junior Research Fellowship is going to be displayed on the BARC site. The chosen candidates will also be informed by mail. The final induction of the chosen applicants as JRFs will be subject to production of necessary documents in original (Proof of Date of Birth/ Caste Certificate/ physically challenged certificate when applicable, B.Sc. / M.Sc. Degree and Mark sheets) on the dates intimated to the candidates by the Department.
ix. The number of fellowships indicated within this advertisement is approximate and might vary as per the requirement at the time of final selection. The Centre reserves the right not to fill the fellowships if it’s so desired. BARC reserves the right to screen and call only such candidate as can be found prima-facie suitable for being considered by the Selection Committee. Therefore, just fulfilling the prescribed conditions shouldn’t entitle one to be called for interview. The fellowship will not confer any claim or right for regular employment in the Centre or any Unit of Department of Atomic Energy. Opportunity for meritorious candidates exists for the position of visiting scientist beneath KSKRA scheme.
x. Candidates that are NOT meeting the cited qualifications NEED NOT apply.
xi. The period of service rendered as research fellow won’t be counted in any post of DAE/Other Government Department.
xii. Admission will never be claimed by any candidate for a matter of right. The admission shall be entirely at the discretion of the Selection Committee, which might refuse to admit any candidate without assigning any reason thereof.
xiii. No correspondence at all form will be entertained from candidates regarding the reason for not being called for interview/ outcome of the interview.
7. APPLICATION FEE
i) Application fee of 500/- (Rupees five hundred only) is payable at the time of submission of online application. Mode of payment of the Application Fee is only via Online.
ii) The application fee is exempted for Women candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Person with Disabilities.
iii) After submission of the online application, the applicant must make online payment of application fee using Application Number generated. If the application fee isn’t paid, the application will be treated as incomplete and rejected.
iv) For payment of fee, applicants should click the ‘Make Payment’ option under the’My Account’ menu. The Application number generated while submission of application can be selected from Drop-down box and on clicking on the submit button applicants can go to the next page for making the online payment.

vi) Fee once paid will not be reimbursed under any circumstances and cannot be held in reserve for any additional recruitment.
vii) Application fee ought to be paid before or on the final date of receipt of online application.
8. HOW TO APPLY ONLINE:
i. Facility for submission of online application will be available from 13/06/2019 at 1000 hours 12/07/2019 up to 1700 hours the website of BARC i.e. https://recruit.barc.gov.in
ii. Applications will be accepted only through online mode.
iii. Candidate must read the instructions in the advertisement and online application form carefully before making any entry or choosing an option.
iv. Before fulfilling the application form, applicants must keep ready the essential documents/ certifications required. Candidate must fill up personal particulars and details of discipline applied for upload and etc. lately removed front facing passport size photo in JPEG format with size not exceeding 20 KB. Photograph not in conformity with the specification shall render the application liable to be rejected. While filling the online application form candidates must make sure that all of the essential details are entered.
v. While filling out the application online, it’s compulsory for the candidates to indicate that their Qualifying Exam Score details (Name of the Qualifying Exam / Score / Date of Exam) in the column ‘Name of Examination’ under point no.16- “Education and professional qualifications”, failing that their application won’t be processed.
vi. A valid email ID and Mobile Number is required for submitting the application online and email ID ought to be kept active until the declaration of results. BARC will send call letter for the interview to the registered/ specified email ID or applicants may be asked to download from the site of BARC. No correspondence will be sent through courier/post.
vii. The candidate must make sure that their signature and photo are clearly visible in preview in the time of completing the application in online mode. If photo/ signature exhibited is small or not visible in preview a website, that means photo/ signature isn’t according to the mandatory format and in case the application will be rejected. Therefore, candidates have to guarantee that signature and photo are clearly visible. viii. Before clicking on the submit button, then the candidate is advised to check that all the details filled in are right. Candidate can also make sure that the name, date of birth, etc., have been entered properly in the application form according to the Secondary School Certificate (SSC). Any erroneous information may disqualify the candidature. After final submission of application, no request for change/ correction in any of the information in the application form shall be entertained under any conditions. ix. In the event the original B.Sc. /M.Sc. /Scorecard mark sheets/certificates have been submitted to any other institution for pursuing other courses, candidates have to submit a letter to that effect from the Head of that institution.
9. COPIES OF CERTIFICATES TO BE SUBMITTED THROUGH EMAIL
Candidates will be advised to generate a printout after submission of online application and payment of the fee. The candidates are directed to submit the following documents (PDF format only) through email at: [email protected], quoting APPLICATION NUMBER in the subject line:-
- Educational qualifications supported by appropriate certificates and mark sheets (B.Sc. and M.Sc.)
- Qualifying Examination legitimate score certification (UGC-CSIR-NET; JEST; ICMR-JRF, ICARJRF, DBT-JRB).
10. TRAVELLING ALLOWANCE
Candidates called for the interview will be reimbursed to and fro Third AC railway fare by the shortest route (subject to production of original tickets) according to rules.
The chosen candidates are eligible to join the Contributory Health Services Scheme of the Centre as applicable.
The chosen candidates will be provided with subsidized bachelor Hostel Accommodation only for an initial period of one month. The candidates will be assisted to get accommodation on rental basis.
13. FELLOWSHIP AND TENURE
The chosen candidates will be initially taken as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and will be paid a stipend of 31,000/- a month. The fellowship will be provided initially for a period of 2 years. Continuation of this fellowship is subject to satisfactory review and performance at the conclusion of every year. On satisfactory performance, the tenure of Fellowship will be further extended and updated to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) in the third year onwards with a stipend of 35000/- per month (consolidated). The total period of the fellowship will in no case exceed five years. They’re eligible for contingency grant including book allowance of 32000/per year.
Additionally, the fellows qualify for House Rent Allowance of 7440/p.m.(JRF) and 8400/- p.m. (SRF).

14. CANCELLATION OF THE CANDIDATURE
The candidate is cautioned to not furnish any incomplete, false or misleading information or submit any document that’s defective, forged or fabricated or otherwise not admissible or claim fraudulently SC/ST/OBC/Person with Disability status etc., or resort to any sort of malpractice during the selection process. Notwithstanding verification of original records during different phases of the selection procedure, if such a case is detected at any stage of the selection procedure or later on, this Centre reserves the right to withdraw/cancel candidature or selection apart from taking other appropriate legal action.
Candidates won’t be permitted to appear for the interview should they don’t bring the print out of the Application along with a valid photo identity card (such a Voter ID, Driving License, AADHAR Card, Passport, College ID) and the files in first at the time of interview.
The Application is deemed to have been received only after the receipt of:
a) Copy of online application duly filled and signed along with photograph affixed.
b) the prescribed fee.
c) B.Sc., M.Sc., Degree certificates, Mark Sheets, Qualifying Examination Score Certification, in the email: [email protected] by the final date of receipt of application.
Otherwise, the application won’t be processed.
CANVASSING IN ANY FORM WILL BE A DISQUALIFICATION
RECORD OF THE NON-SELECTED CANDIDATES SHALL NOT BE PRESERVED BEYOND SIX MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF PUBLICATION OF SELECT LIST.
