Online applications are invited for the PhD program in Biology at IISER Pune for the January 2019 session in the following streams:
(A) General Biology
(B) Computational Biology
(C) Ecology and Evolution
IISER Pune hosts a varied group of researchers working in a variety of areas. Research in Biology in IISER Pune currently encompasses both experimental and theoretical approaches to the broad areas of Systems Biology, Ecology and Population Dynamics, Evolutionary-Developmental Biology, Cancer Biology, Neurobiology, Epigenetics and Gene-Environment interactions, Plant Biology, Ecology & Evolution, Entomology and Chemical Ecology. Given the wide scope of research done at IISER Pune, we’re also open to applicants that have specialized in areas other than Biology. Students with a quantitative background in Science and Engineering will find a number of faculty members engaged at the interface of Biology and Mathematics or Physics.

FAQ for PhD Admission at IISER, General Queries Discussed
Eligibility Criteria:
- Minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or CGPA 6 out of 10 point scale (55% or equal CGPA in aggregate for SC/ST and PD applicants ) in Masters’ Degree in any branch of Science: Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Biological Sciences / Ecology & Environmental Sciences / Biodiversity / Psychology or equivalent. BE / B.Tech / M.Tech or MBBS degree holders can also apply.
- Must have qualified a nationwide level exam such as National Eligibility Test (NET) / GATE (any stream) / UGC-JRF / CSIR-JRF / DBT (JRF A category) / ICMR (JRF category I) / NET-LS / INSPIRE-PhD. The certificate/fellowship has to be valid in the time of admission.
- In addition to the above criteria, the candidate MUST satisfy one of the following criteria:
(a) Qualified a National Eligibility exam that provides a 5 year PhD fellowship*, for example, CSIR–JRF / UGC–JRF / DBT–JRF–A / ICMR–JRF / DBT–BINC–JRF / Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship.
(b) Qualified for an INSPIRE–PhD Fellowship (ought to be accountable for Provisional Selection Letter at the time of written examination ).
* The fellowships MUST be valid as on January 01, 2019.
Notice: Applicants that have appeared for any of fellowship examinations according to point 3 above however are awaiting the results are eligible to apply. However please note that the fellowship Has to Be valid as on January 01, 2019
Application Procedure:
- Only online applications will be accepted.
- The applicants should carefully fill and submit the online application form before or on the specified date.
- Following the last date, all applications will be screened and applicants chosen for interviews will be intimated by email.

- Candidates that are appearing or are about to appear for final examinations of their qualifying degree program are eligible to apply for the PhD program. But if chosen, entrance into the PhD program could be conditional upon their finishing the qualifying degree together with all the defined marks criteria, before 1st January 2019.
- Selection will be determined by interviews of those short-listed candidates.
- Relaxation of eligibility criteria for SC/ST and PD applicants will be according to Government of India norms. Candidates belonging to reserved category might need to submit applicable certificates if selected.
- Applying doesn’t automatically ensure that a candidate will be shortlisted for interview. The respective departments may use additional criteria (depending on academic performance and/or performance at the national level tests) in order to shortlist applicants for interviews based on the number of applications received.
