UPSC Indian Forest Service Exam – Eligibility Details

Indian Forest Service (IFS or IFoS) is one of the prestigious All India Services conducted once every year by Union Public Service Commission of the Government of India. Similar to Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or Indian Police Service (IPS) it requires candidates to appear in the preliminary exams and achieve a passing score to qualify for the scientific management of the forests. IFS/IFoS is one of the Civil Services of India that belongs to the apex All India Services Group with the aim of serving

the government’s forestry services. Its main focus is the successful implementation of several National Forest Policy to ensure a healthful and balanced ecology.

Becoming an IFS officer means being involved in the exercise of administrative, judicial, and financial powers of the forestry department. You may hold top positions in the state’s forest department depending on your score and overall qualification.

Eligibility Criteria For Indian Forest Service Exam

To qualify for the IDS/IFoS Exam, you must comply with the following be any of the following:

  1. a citizen of India, or
  2. a subject of Nepal, or
  3. a subject of Bhutan, or
  4. a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India
  5. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries like Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India
  6. Any candidate who belongs to categories B, C, D, and E must show a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India, otherwise, the application will not be accepted

Educational Qualification For Indian Forest Service Exam

  1. The candidate must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following subjects namely, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology, Agriculture, Forestry, and Engineering.
  2. Candidates who appear at their degree examination with prescribed subjects can also vie for a position. You must clear the written part of the examination and must submit proof of passing the examination together with an application.

Note: All IFS or IFoS candidates must have graduated from universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament, or deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act of 1956.

Can Graduation Final Year Students also apply?

Candidates who have appeared at an examination the passing of which would render them educationally qualified for the Commission’s examination but have not been informed of the results as also the candidates who intend to appear at such a qualifying examination will also be eligible for admission to the Preliminary Examination.

Candidates who are declared qualified by the Commission for taking the Indian Forest Service Main Examination will be required to produce proof of passing the requisite examination with their application for the Main Examination, failing which candidates will not be allowed for the Main examination.

Age Limit Indian Forest Service Exam

You must be at least 21 years old to 30 years old on 1st of July of the year of examination in order to be admitted to the IFS or IFoS exam. This means that you must not have been born earlier than 2nd August 1984 and not later than 1995.  The age limit may be relaxed in the following special cases.

Ex-servicemen including Commissioned officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least 5 years Military Service as on and have been released: Up to 5 years
ECOs/ SSCOs Up to a maximum of 5 years
Blind, deaf-mute and Orthopedically handicapped persons Up to 10 years

 

Number of Attempts Allowed For Indian Forest Service Exam

Every candidate is encouraged to do their best in the IFS/IFoS exam as there will be restrictions on the number of attempts in taking the exam. The following are the number of attempts allowed for different types of candidates.

Only those candidates who have cleared the IFS/IFoS exam will be allowed to proceed to the Indian Forest Service Main Examination while those who have failed will have their chance next year.

The application for the Main Examination will be called sometime in the month or July or August. Keep posted of the recent updates through online websites and publications.

Remember that the cut-off score of IFS candidates for the Main Exam is often greater than that of the Civil Service Exam Prelims. All you need to do is clear your Prelims to have a high chance of converting.
