About the college: In 1985, the then National Board of Biotechnology selected University of Pune as one of its five centres for imparting training in M.Sc. Biotechnology. Biotechnology Department is grateful to them for all their help over a decade and half. This programme also included post-graduate training in M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Biotechnology with a broad based intake of students from related branches of science. Prof. Modak held the Coordinatorship till October 1988 and then Prof. V. Sitaramam took over as the Coordinator. Until October 1994, Biotechnology Training Programme was conducted at the Department of Zoology and on October 7, 1994, the University created an independent Biotechnology Department under the headship of Prof. A. S. Kolaskar. The main premise in the teaching programme of the department of biotechnology has been emphasis on practical training in all the relevant branches. The Department arranges lectures to be delivered by scientists in many field both from India and abroad, It was drawing upon zoology for most biology-related teaching including molecular biology and genetic engineering and experimental set-ups including microscopy.
