M.Sc / Ph.D Studentships at University of Calgary, Canada, Biochemistry candidates can apply

Two graduate student opportunities are currently available in our lab. Please contact Dr. Aalim Weljie for further details (aweljie@ucalgary.ca).

M.Sc / Ph.D Studentships: Environmental Toxicometabolomics / Metabolic Consequences of Cancer Signalling Pathways.

Last Date: September 1, 2009.

Two graduate student positions are available in the Weljie Research group at the University of Calgary. These studentships are part of highly multidisciplinary initiatives which aim to study metabolism using cutting-edge metabolic profiling technologies. Individuals with backgrounds in biochemistry, oncology, chemistry, statistics, and computer science are encouraged to apply.

Environmental Toxicometabolomics: This initiative seeks to characterize physiological changes in biochemical pathways of hormone-sensitive cancer cells. The candidate will examine the metabolism disruptive effect of a number of commonly found water-borne pollutants. Funding for this studentship is provided by the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada.

Metabolic Consequences of Cancer Signalling Pathways: This project is based on elucidating mechanistic information about the downstream impact of inhibiting or inducing oncogene signalling pathways. The candidate will conduct experiments in model systems (cell lines, mouse models) and gain familiarity with signal transduction in oncogenetic processes. Funding is provided by the Alberta Cancer Research Institute (ACRI).

Please send a curriculum vitae listing relevant experience and education, as well as the names of three references and academic transcripts to Dr. Aalim Weljie, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Calgary, T2N 1N4. Email: aweljie@ucalgary.ca. The candidates will also be required to gain admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Calgary, and will be and will be expected to apply for external funding.

The Metabolomics Research Centre is a collaborative research facility using cutting-edge technologies. Researchers will have access to state-of-the-art GC-TOF-MS as well as extensive NMR facilities through the University of Calgary Bio-NMR Centre.

The University of Calgary is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in beautiful Calgary Alberta, and has been ranked by the Economist as the 8th best city to live in world-wide. We have the youngest and most educated population in Canada, giving rise to vibrant world-class academic and extra-curricular opportunities.
