Plight of life science in an engineering college

Hi biotecnikas,
I would like to share my experience as a biotech engineer from chennai.Well I joined this course with lot of enthusiams to explore and handle things related to life sciences but what the syllabus taught me was jus more of maths n chemistry n as far as core papers wer concerned we wer taught jus to write n pass away our exams. At the very first yr of my college I had nearly 10 subjects of which I had only one core paper biochem. To say the true fact there wer hardly few lecturers who taught us had gud knowledge abt the subject while many of them jus gazed thr a single book to supply us with notes. While few of them who believed us as supertalents never taught us anythin. We had our own senior as our teacher who had stage fear n hence she never liked to teach us anythin.Coming to the practicals we had all papers related to core sub lik immunology, cell bio, microbio, analytical lab etc etc but wat we wer able to do in our labs was jus to sit in the lab doin watever we could to pass on the 3 hours in the afternoon. Our lab was like a recreation spot wer everyone would b busy listenin songs in mp3 playing games chit chatting n lastly sleeping.Wen we hav our practicals we jus had one thing to do.Write the aim theory principle procedure and result that u wrote in ur record n go for the viva voce.We copy our records from our seniors who copied it from their seniors. This is wat we call pass on to the future. Now my juniors are copying from my record. Our lab had the instruments but neither the management had the interest to buy the chemicals for us nor to listen to our complaints .Each semester its an usual scene we go to the management office n return back with no gud news. Our college was more keen on the money player depts lik mech IT etc wer they earn randomsome as management fee.We wernt able to fight more bcos we wer a minority n the fear of being screwed out of college din let us go for a strike.Hence I suggest you all if you have an idea to do ur engg in chennai especially in biotech enquire 1000 times abt the college.. Bcos once u get into a college u cant do anythin than jus adopting yourself to the college culture.
This is not to discourage anyone.I still have the zeal to pursue myself a career in biotech.I would like to jus share this to you as a alarimg factor and make u aware of the truth that "this is wat is happening in most of the engg colleges here".So be cautious and aware friends.Opt for the best college with gud lab facilities bcos we dont get education for free.

Cheers
karthika

we are in such a plight

I totally agree with you bcoz any of the biotech students are nt at all satisfied with thefacilities in the labs and nobody cares for we people having an enormous interest towards the subject. The problem is that the ifra structure towards the biotech dept. in any of the colleges is nt satisfactory. Its disappointing . We can get rid of this problem if we can crack exams lyk JNU and IIT-JAM where there is a huge scope for budding biotechnologists.
